2011 National Board Certified Teachers are announced

Fifty-one educators in Wyoming have earned the highest credential available to American educators by recently becoming National Board Certified Teachers through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

National Board Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment of a teacher’s instructional skills and content knowledge. The certification takes anywhere from one to three years to complete and includes a number of measurements.

While the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board sets the basic standards to teach in Wyoming, National Board Certified Teachers have demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. NBPTS certification identifies qualified teachers as leaders in their field, much like the certifications earned by experts in law and medicine.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to all our members who have completed this process, and special congratulations to those who were successful,” said WEA President Kathryn Valido.

The 2011 class of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) is numbered at 6,266, bringing the total NBCTs in the U.S. to just over 97,000. Currently, 365 educators in Wyoming have earned NBCT status. In the past five years, Wyoming was one of two states in which the number of NBCTs has quadrupled.
