Wyoming National Board Certification Initiative Update

National Board Certification Candidate Recruitment:

On Tues., May 2, a National Board Certification County-wide Informational Meeting will be held in Douglas at 3:45 p.m. in the School District Central Office Board Room.  Mary Ellbogen Garland and Rae Lynn Job have been traveling across the state since late March to hold informational meetings in school districts about the National Board Certification Initiative.  The goal is to meet and discuss the Initiative with teachers from all districts who are interested in becoming an active candidate this spring.  Mary and Rae Lynn are also meeting with superintendents and building administrators who would like to know more about the Initiative's goals, supporting research and the financial/support services provided to candidates.  These recruitment meetings are posted on the Wyoming National Board Certification Initiative's website, www.wnbci.org, on the “Calendar of Events” pages.  The meetings are held after school and at a location accessible to more than one school district.

Candidate Support:

The Initiative has scheduled two Jump Start Programs for this summer.  The first is scheduled for June 13-15, 2006, at the Holiday Inn in Riverton, Wyoming. The second is scheduled for August 1-3, 2006, in Casper at the Holiday Inn.  These three-day workshops will replace the Friday/Saturday workshops of this past school year.  Jump Start facilitators will guide teachers through an in-depth exploration of the standards and requirements for national certification.

Additionally, they will provide instruction and practice with descriptive and analytical writing, techniques for videotaping their lessons and organizing to prepare for the assessment center exercises. Agendas, registration timelines and registration forms are posted on the Initiative's website, www.wnbci.org. The Initiative will cover the expenses for the workshop registration and materials, two nights lodging, breakfasts and lunches. Transportation and evening meals are the responsibility of the candidates.

2006 Legislative Action:

In addition to funds to match the Ellbogen Foundation money for the upcoming biennium, the legislature approved the funding for a $4000 payment to National Board Certified teachers for each year of the biennium.

For information on the rigorous knowledge, skills and time requirements of the NBC assessment process, visit the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website at www.nbpts.org and click on the candidate information and resource pages; or contact Rae Lynn Job at rjob@wyoming.com.
