As we move forward following the recent legislative session, our public education system is entering a period of change. School districts across Wyoming are now tasked with reworking their budgeting processes in response to changes in the state’s funding model. This is not a simple or immediate shift. In fact, districts do not yet have all the information they need to fully move forward, and critical guidance from the Wyoming Department of Education is still forthcoming.
That uncertainty is real. But so is the opportunity in front of us.
Because of the advocacy and collective effort of educators across this state, WEA successfully helped secure an additional $123 million in education funding. While this investment is not a perfect solution, it represents meaningful progress and creates an opening for something just as important: the educator’s voice in how these new systems take shape.
This moment calls for engagement.
As districts begin to rethink their processes, our local associations have a unique opportunity to step forward as partners in that work. These decisions will shape classrooms, workloads, and student outcomes for years to come. Our members deserve to be at the table—not after decisions are made, but while they are being formed.
I strongly encourage our local leaders to reach out now to district leadership. Begin the conversation. Set up meetings. Offer collaboration. Ask how educators can be part of re-imagining budgeting priorities and processes in ways that truly support students and staff.
Local leaders should also know that you are not in this work alone. Your UniServ Directors are ready to support you, whether that’s helping prepare for meetings, thinking through strategy, or navigating complex conversations. Don’t hesitate to reach out and utilize that expertise.
And to all members: your voice and engagement matter.

We are not waiting on the sidelines for change to happen — we are helping shape it.
