WEA responds to Degenfelder’s statement

Wyoming Education Association President Kim Amen issued the following statement in response to the recent inquiry from Superintendent Degenfelder:

“The Wyoming Education Association (WEA) is aware of the concerns raised by Superintendent Megan Degenfelder regarding recent New Business Items (NBIs) introduced at the National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly.

“To clarify, the NBIs referenced by the superintendent were submitted by individual delegates, not by the NEA itself nor by the Wyoming Education Association. While the NBIs were adopted, they were not adopted unanimously and do not reflect the views of all NEA members or state affiliates.

“The WEA has no issue denouncing the content of these NBIs, and in fact, the WEA is formally on record opposing them.

“The WEA’s focus has always been – and will continue to be – on advocating for high-quality public education in our state, supporting Wyoming educators, and ensuring every Wyoming student has the opportunity to succeed. The WEA rejects divisive rhetoric from all sides, including that which resulted in the assassination of Democrats in Minnesota last month. We remain committed to modeling civil discourse, respect, and professionalism.

“The WEA serves Wyoming’s students, educators, and communities. We do so with independence, integrity, and in alignment with the values of our state.”
