WEA Announces 2026 Statewide Honorees

At the 2026 Delegate Assembly held in Cheyenne this month, the Wyoming Education Association announced this year’s award winners in seven different categories.

At the 2026 Delegate Assembly held in Cheyenne this month, the Wyoming Education Association announced this year’s award winners in seven different categories:

  • Gold Key Award: Steve Thulin, formerly of Powell

The WEA’s most prestigious award, presented for extraordinary service which has contributed to the professional development of WEA and to the enhancement and advancement of education in Wyoming.

  • Teaching Excellence Award: Tim Bessette, Gillette

Presented to a member who demonstrates instructional expertise, creativity, innovation and advocacy for the profession.

  • Education Support Professional of the Year: Ashley Carson, Rock Springs

Presented to a WEA member whose activities reflect the contributions of education support professionals to public education.

  • Harriet “Liz” Byrd Award: John Fabela, Powell

Recognizes outstanding contributions in human relations, multiculturalism and diversity in the field of education, promoting collaboration and harmony among diverse groups.

  • Green Apple Award: Byron Lee, Justin Deegan, Danielle Halsey, and Aimme Gray, Laramie

Recognizes contributions to environmental awareness, bringing the efforts of educators to the attention of the public and the education community.

  • School Bell Award: Better Wyoming

Presented for outstanding coverage of education news and issues, given in appreciation of journalistic excellence related to Wyoming education.

  • Friend of Education Award: Ray Morris, Cheyenne

Recognizes demonstrated evidence of exceptional service to teachers, schools, and children.
