The Wyoming Education Association (WEA) is disappointed in today’s decision from the Wyoming Supreme Court regarding the state’s appeal of the preliminary injunction in the private school voucher case.
WEA respects the Court’s opinion and its role in interpreting the law. At the same time, this is a concerning result because it will allow, in the short term, public taxpayer funds to be spent on private schools – in conflict with the Wyoming Constitution – and not spent on the more than 95 percent of Wyoming students who attend public schools.
And our state’s public schools continue to be the ones who suffer. Right now, they are being told there is not enough money for student activities, athletics, music and arts programs, or nutrition services. These are programs that help students succeed academically, stay engaged in school, and remain connected to their communities.
Public schools serve every child who walks through their doors, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance. These schools are at the center of Wyoming communities, and public education funding should reflect that priority.
WEA looks forward to pursuing the case further and continuing to defend both the Constitution and the appropriate use of public funds to provide students with a high-quality education in Wyoming’s public schools. We will continue advocating for Wyoming’s students, education professionals, public schools, and communities while defending the constitutional promise of a strong and equitable public education system for every child.
